What We Can Do in the Community

Make a difference right now! Individual actions, even passive resistance, may seem small but together they can change the world.

A few important things to keep in mind
* Where we spend our money, whether we shop in a socially and ecologically responsible way, has a HUGE effect on the environment and developing countries!!
* Every time you buy something, every TV show or movie you see, every car you buy counts as another vote for the future of the planet
* Equally important is what you choose not to buy!
* Do you know what your bank is doing with your savings, your pensions? And if you have them, where have you invested your stocks and bonds?
* Shouldn't we sometimes question who really benefits from our work or business and who gets taken advantage of?
* In a nutshell, in our current society with many innocuous appearing activities such as shopping, working, enjoying life and having fun, we only foster the status quo:
we help the rich get richer, the poor POORER
, and support a short-sighted, materialistic society that's bend on destroying itself and the world.

Suggestions of what you can do
* Try to bank only with financial institutions that do not charge interest, such as the JAK banks
Here's what Thomas Jefferson said about money and banks. President Lincoln was assassinated after publishing this document, which was then quietly buried!
* Start an organic community garden with your neigbors - you'll have healthier and GM-free produce
* Don't join a group, organize your own civic actions group
* Contact the schools in your neighborhood and ask if you can teach classes about avoiding trash, recycling and nutrition
Many schools only serve prepackaged lunch, which produces unnecessary garbage and sends the children the wrong message: it's OK to trash the planet
* Ask your local store or supermarket to set up recycling bins for paper, cardboard, packaging, dead batteries
Many German supermarkets, chain stores and German Rail offer such recycling bins, hopefully other countries will eventually follow
* Encourage your local store or supermarket to offer products in reusable containers and return bottles (such as beverages and dairy products)
* Also encourage your local store or supermarket to offer more organic and Fair Trade prodcts
* Take part in and suggest frequent neigborhood cleanups, they'll leave your area a lot cleaner and make people more sensitive to littering and issues of pollution
* Ask your local newspaper, radio or TV station to run (more) programs on a healthy diet, the social and environmental aspects of shopping and consuming
A few pointers: air travel, fuel efficiency of cars, ecological impact of production (transport, disposal), origin of products (low-wage countries, sweat shops, child labor)
* If you're wealthy consider sharing what you have in excess of what you need for a safe and comfortable life style
If nobody's left wanting the whole world will be safer!
* Take part in directed mental activities such as group meditations and prayers, if you believe in them - they appear to have an impact, too.
* Whenever possible walk, ride your bike, use public transit or do car-sharing instead of taking your own car
